What is Acupunture?

A breakdown of the word acupunture gives us two words; ‘acus’ meaning needle and the other ‘puncture’. Acupunture is an alternative method to medication for treating various illnesses and it was developed by the ancient Chinese. The way accupuncture method works is by inserting needles at various acupoints in the body. Certain sensations which the Chinese called Quichi ot teichi need be triggered in order for needling to be effective. acupunture involves a tingling sensation that emits from the specific acupoints and radiates in a controlled direction.

Many people may be hesitant to get needles inserted in their body. There have been various new modifications to cater to the modern man such as electrical and laser acupuncture. Better still is another form of touch therapy known as Acupressure. This form of massage therapy substitutes the use of needles with finger pressure. In this technique the same acupoints are used as in accupuncture in order to generate the same sensations only through the use of fingers.

How much is acupressure safe?
This technique can be learnt by an individual to practice upon himself. But there are certain precautionary measures that one must take in order to avoid any further damage. People with irregular blood pressure and pregnant women must exercise great caution as the stimulation of certain acupoints may lead to dire consequences. Moreover acupressure should not be applied in areas of scar tissues, open wounds, rashes or swelled up regions. Self treatment of acupunture is no substitute for professional health care hence professionals should be consulted for conditions that are chronic.
